AN OVERVIEW OF THE MEDICAL BILLING BUSINESS THIS IS NOT A GET-RICH-QUICK business! It is a good way to make an honest living with a moderate initial investment. If you are looking for a work at home situation, medical billing is a good opportunity. You can handle one or two clients and make a good income. On the other hand you may have bigger plans. Our business started as a sideline in 1986 and has grown to as many as 20 employees. We have had to work hard to achieve this. Customer service is vitally important to the success of any business. Doctors can be very demanding and skeptical of all the sales pitches they are subjected to. You will be responsible for their income stream - the life blood of their business! It's a huge responsibility, not to be taken lightly. We have seen medical practices pushed to the brink of destruction due to poor billing practices. On the other hand, physicians these days are very sensitive to cost issues. Well run Billing Services WILL save a doctor money. Like any other new business, obtaining your first customers will be your biggest challenge. If you are people-orientated and enjoy the satisfaction derived from a job well done you are off to a good start. If you know one or more physicians who would be willing to give you a try, you are off to an even better start. You are going to need to learn about lots of codes. Everything in medicine is identified by a code. A headache is not a headache to an insurance company, rather it's a 784.0, or one of many other codes, depending on the nature of the headache. An office visit is not an office visit, it's a 99201 or 99202 or 99203 or ........, again depending on the nature of the office visit. For more about codes click on our Links pages. Another issue you are going to deal with is computers. If you don't like them, or are uncomfortable working with computers, stop right here and look for another field (some can be found on this site). Medical billing is very computer intensive. Hardware has come down dramatically in price and gone up in reliability therefore it is less of an issue than it used to be. Almost all software runs on Windows these days and there is no shortage of good hardware to run Windows programs. Software is a whole different issue. There are hundreds of medical billing software programs out there. We went through four (yes 4!) in 8 years before we found one that met all of our needs, didn't break us financially and was backed up by people who cared. When you make this selection do it with great care and get LOTS of references. Well I could go on and on but then I would be writing a book, wouldn't I? If you want to investigate further I recommend that you check out the MedicalBillingCourse.com. This inexpensive course is the most comprehensive around and the best way to get started. I wish I had these resources when we started out. Best of luck! Dan Puleio,
